Pre War
On 26 Jul 1911 Emanuel married Edith Serls (1888 - 1973) locally. Edith died on 14 Feb 1973 in Armadale, aged 85. They had 3 children: Ernest Emanuel Mills (1916 - 2006); Douglas Joseph (Doug) Mills (1921 - 2001); and Doris Edith Mills (1927 - 2015).

War Service
On 19 Apr 1942 Emanuel was mobilised and given his age and occupation he was posted to the Volunteer Defence Corp's 3rd (Swan) VDC Battalion where he was allocated to the 'H.V' Company. On 28 Feb 1943 he was transferred to the 2nd (Fremantle) VDC Battalion. On 15 Nov 1943 he was discharged at his own request.
