Pre War
During 1932 Charles married Myrtle Letitia Moore (1910 - 1990) in Fremantle. They had a son Vernon Herbert Rutherford died after 13 days in 1936, and a daughter Lynette Elaine Rutherford (Hanks) (1940-2012).

War Service
On 26 Apr 1942 Charles enlisted in the Volunteer Defence Corps at Mundijong where he was allocated to the 12th (Jarrah) VDC Battalion.
