War Service
John's service was in three different forms: from 26 Dec 1941 until 16 Apr 1942 he was a full time member of the VDC. On 17 Apr 1942 he became a member of a Garrison Battalion, and then on 3 Jun 1942 he was enlisted into the Australian Military Forces.
John enrolled in the VDC on 26 Dec 1941 and was taken on for full time duty. On 9 Jan 1942 he was posted to No. 2 Post (Mt Flora) before transferring on 17 Apr 1942 to the 29th Australian Garrison Battalion. The same day he was promoted Acting Corporal, before being transferred on 11 May 1942 to the 5th Australian Garrison Battalion. On 3 June at his own request he reverted to Private and was posted to the District Finance Office. He was sick at home from 16 - 19 Nov 1942, and then promoted to Corporal on 1 Dec 1942.
A year later, on 14 Dec 1943 he was promoted to Acting Sergeant, with that rank confirmed on 14 Mar 1944. However, on 27 Jun 1944 his medical classification was changed to B2 chronic indigestion (gastric ulcer). On 20 Oct 1945 John was admitted to 110th Australian Base Hospital in Nedlands before being transferred to 71st Australian Camp Hospital on 26 Oct 1945. On 12 Nov 1945 he was released from the hospital to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot. On 21 Nov 1945 the decision was made to discharge John, and this took place on 23 Nov 1945.
