On 27 Sep 1942 May enlisted in the Australian Women's Army Service at Claremont and was granted Trade Grouping of Stenographer TG II. On 19 Oct 1942 May was transferred to [[Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot]]. On 23 Jun 1943 May was transferred to the [[Western Australian Echelon & Records]] where on 2 Jul 1943 she was promoted Acting Corporal. Her rank was confirmed on  2 Oct 1943 having undertaken a course for NCOs and potential NCOs between 21 Aug and 30 Sep 1944 (85.5% achieved). Granted LWOP from 14 Feb 1944 until 10 Apr 1944.
