On 21 Jul 1941 Hamilton was mobilised and posted to the HQ 7th Heavy Brigade RAA (M). On 28 Jul 1941 he marched into Rottnest Island's Kingstown Barracks. He was sent on a Local Operator's Course before qualifying as an Instrument Operator Trade Group II on 28 Sep 1942.
