The Late Mr. Thomas James. Armadale lost one of its most notable citizens when Mr. Thomas James died on September 13, at the age of 70 years. The deceased gentleman had resided in Armadale for over 40 years. He came to Western Australia from Ireland in 1892. During the first year or so he lived in the Kalamunda district. He then moved to Armadale, where he established himself as an orchardist. He was always actively involved and[1]interested in all matters appertaining to the development and progress of the district in which he lived. A keen agriculturist and horticulturist he was a foundation member of the Kalamunda Agricultural Society, and he played a main part in establishing a similar society at Kelmscott. He was a member of the Armadale-Kelmscott Road Board for 20 years, and was chairman for a considerable period. During his term of residence in the district a water supply for Armadale was established, a programme of road making and tree planting, and the district provided with many of the facilities which the inhabitants enjoy today. Always to the fore in every movement for the advancement of the district, the deceased gentleman displayed great public spirit and activity in many directions. This was evidenced during the war period, when Armadale's many efforts were headed by him and encouraged to the utmost with wonderful results.
The cortege moved from his late residence, and proceeded to the Church of England cemetery, Kelmscott, the cortege being met at the cemetery by a very large and representative gathering. His remains were carried into the church, where the first portion of the service was conducted, and thence to the grave, where, after an impressive service conducted by the Rev. J. Budge, his remains were laid to rest.
