Tom enlisted part time on 21 Oct 1941 and served with HQ Western Command's 20th Defence and Employment Platoon before he was mobilised for full time duty on 23 Feb 1942, and although his posting was to HQs Western Command, he remained detached to 20th D&E Platoon. On 21 Apr 1942 Tom's posting became HQs 3rd Australian Corps, but still with the 20th D & E Platoon. He subsequently enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 12 Dec 1942.
