On 22 Mar 1942 Norman enlisted in the Volunteer Defence Corps at Armadale, and was allocated to the 2nd (Fremantle) VDC Battalion. On 1 May 1945 along with the rest of his unit he was placed on the reserve.

During 1953 Norm married Margaret Lilla Fraser (1916 - 2002) in Perth. Margaret died on 13 Dec 2002 in Melville.
