Vernon was living at Coomberdale at the time of his enlistment, and spent the first week at the Western Command General Details Camp at Claremont before being sent to Northam on the 30 Mar 1942 to join the General Reinforcements. He was granted leave with pay from 21 to 27 Apr 1942 before being detached to the Bunbury Guard from 26 May until 27 Jun 1942 and then to the Merredin Guard from 29 Jun to 5 Sep 1942. On 6 Sep 1942 he was posted to the 35th Australian Infantry Training Battalion at Graylands to undertake a Desiel Mechanic Course. On 7 Nov 1942 he had successfully completed the course despite having been admitted to the 110th Australian Base Hospital from 19 - 29 Oct 1942.


On 8 Dec 1942 Vernon was transferred from the 75th Australian Camp Hospital at Graylands to the 122nd Australian Special Hospital at Melville, remaining with them until he was released on 21 Jan 1943, and he then returned to his training unit on 23 Jan 1943. On 4 Mar 1943 Vernon was posted to the 3rd Australian Corps Troops Petrol Company. From there he was detached for one day each, first to the 37th Australian Company ASC on 15 Apr 1943, and then the next day to the 38th Australian Company ASC. Vernon was granted seasonal Leave without Pay from 8 May 1943 to assist on the farm. On 27 Aug 1943 Vernon was admitted to the 110th Australian Base Hospital with a broken Fibula, and on 9 Sep 1943 he was transferred to the 109th Australian Convalescent Depot. He returned to duty on 17 Nov 1943 when he joined the 38th Australian Company ASC, remaining with them until he was granted 4 weeks LWOP to assist with the harvest on 20 Dec 1943.
