Brief History
When the war began, the coastal defences of Western Australia was covered by the permanent soldiers of 3rd Heavy Brigade RAA, supported by the militia unit the 7th Heavy Brigade RAA (M). Based at the Artillery Barracks, Fremantle, the 6th Heavy Battery RAA manned the guns on Rottnest, while the 11th Heavy Battery manned the mainland guns at Arthur's Head and Swanbourne. The Albany guns were manned by a detachment. As the militia members were mobilised, they joined the permanent soldiers at each battery. In late 1940 the coastal artillery was re-organised and the militia men from the 7th Heavy Brigade combined with men from the 3rd Heavy Brigade to form integrated batteries at each site.
