On 20 Aug 1940 Evan enlisted in the CMF at Kalgoorlie and was posted to the 44th Australian Infantry Battalion (West Australian Rifle Regiment). On 16 Dec 1941 he was called up for full time duty. On 27 June 1942, still with the 44th Battalion, he enlisted in the 2nd AIF while at Dandaragan. During his service he had numerous periods of LWOP to work in abottoirs.
On 19 Jan 1944 he was transferred to Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for discharge processing with discharge taking place on 20 Jan 1944 - essential services.
Post War
On 30 Mar 1946 Evan married Olive May Glover at Church of Christ, Fremantle. Olive died on 29 Oct 2008, aged 94 in Hamilton Hill. Electoral Roll entries: 1949 - 1968 at 126 View terrace, East Fremantle, sausage packer;
