War Service
Vernon was living at Coomberdale at the time of his enlistment, and spent the first week at the Western Command General Details Camp at Claremont before being sent to Northam on the 30 Mar 1942 to join the General Reinforcements. He was granted leave with pay from 21 to 27 Apr 1942 before being detached to the Bunbury Guard from 26 May until 27 Jun 1942 and then to the Merredin Guard from 29 Jun to 5 Sep 1942. On 6 Sep 1942 he was posted to the 35th Australian Infantry Training Battalion at Graylands to undertake a Deasel Mechanic Course. On 7 Nov 1942 he had successfully completed the course dsespite having been admitted to the 110th Australian Base Hospital from 19 - 29 Oct 1942.

Vernon rejoined his unit on 19 Jan 1944 and worked with them until he was granted 6 weeks LWOP from 29 Apr until 10 Jun 1944, which was extended until 11:00am on 24 Jun 1944. Vernon rejoined his unit on 30 Jun 1944, and on 12 Jul 1944 he was sent to Victoria for reassignment to the 1st Australian Ordnance Vehicle Park on 26 Jul 1944. On 4 Nov 1944 Vernon was sent back to WA to assist with the harvest, being granted LWOP from 20 Nov 1944 until 29 Jan 1945. At this point he was tansferred to the
discharged on 17 Jan 1945
Post War
Adress given on discharge was Namban Siding, via Moora In 1949 Vern married Violet Grace Hawkings. Violet died 20 Apr 1963 at Greenmount aged 52. However, they may have divorced as Vernon's partner 1972-80 is Jessie Alice
