No Electoral Roll entries found. Family tree in Ancestry indicates that he departed Australia in 1920 for London, and in August 1920 he was living in Hvar, Split-Dalmatia, Croatia; 1922 in Sibenik-Knin, Croatia; and in 1925 at Zabreže, Dubrovacko-Neretvanska, Croatia. The family returned to Australia or remained here, as Joseph's sister died here in 1930. Joseph married Bogdana Theodora Vucic on 2 Dec 1939 in Croatia. Prior to his enlistment he was a qualified lawyer (Dr of Law).
War Service
Joseph's original enlistment was in the Militia (CMF) when he was called up on 13 Feb 1942 and given Regimental No W57701. On 6 May 1942 he was appointed Lance Bombardier, and on 7 Jun 1942 promoted Acting Bombardier. From 19 to 31 Jul 1942 he attended an NCO School. Joseph's Regimental Number changed to WX25522 when on 19 Jul 1942 he enlisted in the 2nd AIF. At time of change to the 2nd AIF he was serving with the 9th Battery, 3rd Australian Field Regiment, and remained with them, with his rank confirmed on 27 Dec 1942. Joseph was granted 3 days compassionate leave on 23 Jan 1943.
On 22 Jan 1943 he had been appointed Lance Sergeant and from 31 Jan 1943 until 27 Feb 1943 he attended the NO 1 Senior NCO's School for Gunnery. On 6 Dec 1943 he was promoted Acting Sergeant, and on 24 Dec 1943 he entered the School of Artillery to undertake a Preliminary Staff Course that ran from 3 Jan 1944 until 25 Mar 1944. Returned to his unit, he was assessed medically and on 12 Jun 1944 left his unit for a Final Medical Board.
Admitted to the 110th Australian Base Hospital Perth, he was transferred on 16 Jun 1944 to the 118th Australian General Hospital in Northam with chest pain. On 8 Aug 1944 his Medical Board reclassified him B2 as a result of Pulmonary Fibrosis, and he was discharged from hospital on 16 Aug 1944, and from the Army on 29 Aug 1944.
