On 22 Mar 1942 Harry enlisted in the Volunteer Defence Corps and was allocated to the [[2nd (Fremantle) VDC Battalion]]. On 1 Jul 1942 Harry was promoted Corporal in 'D' Company based on Armadale. From 16 - 23 Aug he attended a Demolition School at Guildford, and on 23 Sep 1942 he was promoted Lance Sergeant, before reverting to Private at his own request on 25 May 1944.
