Henry Victor Goodenough sailed from Liverpool on 23 Sep 1911 aboard the SS Belgic for Fremantle. At some point between then and his marriage he adopted the surname Francis.
During 1922, in Fremantle Henry married Jessie Susannah Rice Gregory (1904 - 1988). Jessie died on 24 Nov 1988 in Gosnells aged 84. They had nine children, including Roby Joyce Francis (1923 - 1996); Beryl Marion Francis (1924 - 2006); Mervyn Joseph Francis (1996 - 2014); Thelma Francis (1928 - 2012); June Betty Francis (1930 - 2017); Harry Alfred William Francis (1931 - 1997); Evelyn Francis (1933 - 2017); Kay Francis (1936 - 2018).

On 1 Jun 1942 Henry was called in to Claremont in response to a mobilisation order where he was decreed to be in a reserved occupation. Medically classified as B3 due to a hernia. On 16 Mar 1943 Henry enlisted in the Volunteer Defence Corps at Armadale and was allocated to the 2nd (Fremantle) VDC Battalion. Discharged at his own request on 30 Aug 1944.
