John enlisted in the Volunteer Defence Corps at Maddington on 29 Mar 1942 and was posted to the 2nd (Fremantle) VDC Battalion. From 16 - 23 Mar 1942 he attended an NCO School at Guildford and on 1 Jul 1942 he was promoted Sergeant. From 18 Jul until 8 Aug 1942 he attended the No. 4 Guerilla Course at Narrogin. John reported an injury to his back on 24 Nov 1944. No investigation was required, and the following note appears in his file.

Statement by Sgt Dooley of 152 Troop, 86th Search Light Battery; "On Nov 24th I was called in to a voluntary parade on the searchlights. At 2130 hours, when pulling in the cable I injured my spine, and was unable to attend parades for two weeks. As this is an old weakness of almost 8 years standing and has only been relieved by treatments by a chiropractor when needed, I did not report to the local Medical Officer. I am not claiming any compensation. 8 Dec 1944.

On 1 May 1945 along with the rest of his unit he was placed in Reserve.
