Patrick's initial enlistment was with the AIF from 17 Dec 1941 until 19 Jun 1942. Patrick and others from the AIF Training Camp at Northam were formed into a battalion strength Dalgite Force in February 1942 to supplement the Garrison Battalions defence of the Fremantle area. They camped at Hamilton Hill and were engaged in work on the defences between Swanbourne and Garden Island. With the arrival of troops home from the Middle East, they were released back to training, and were withdrawn to Northam.

Post WW 2
During 1947 Patrick married Norma Hilda Stonehouse. Norma died on 15 Apr 2011 in Withers aged 92.
