On 6 Mar 1941 Gordon enlisted in the CMF's 16th Australian Infantry Battalion (Cameron Highlanders) at the Drill Hall, Mounts Bay road, Perth, but it wasn't until 17 Jul 1941 that he entered training at Melville Camp. On 14 Oct 1941, his initial training was completed, and on 16 Dec 1941 he was called up for full time duty following Japan's entry into the war.
