Joseph was mobilised for full time duty on 20 May 1941 in Perth and on 2 Jun 1941 was classified as a Trade Group II Cook. The same day he was detached to the 25th Machine Gun Regiment until 26 Jun 1941. On 14 Mar 1942 he was transferred to HQ Fixed Defences Fremantle.
