Florence enlisted in the Australian Women's Army Service at Perth on 12 May 1943 and on the 15th she was sent to the [[6th AWS Training Depot]]. On 8 Jun 1943 she was detached to [[WA Line of Communication Area Workshop]], and remained with them until 16 Nov 1945 when she was transferred to the [[110th Australian base Hospital]]. While with the Area Workshop she had on 31 Mar 1944 qualified as a Trade Group III Wireless Mechanic. She had also spent from 30 Apr - 3 Jun 1945 in [[10th Australian Base Hospital]] and from 4 Jun - 12 Jul 1945 in a rehabilitation home. On 20 Mar 1946 Florence was promoted Acting Corporal, and had that rank confirmed on 1 Jun 1946. Florence remained posted to the hospital until just before her discharge on 29 Jan 1947.

In the 1911 British census Florence is listed as a 2 year old, living at Middle Bickenhill Hampton In Arden Near Birmingham, with her parents William and Jane, both 26 years old. As a three year old she emigrated with her parents as third class passengers to Fremantle, leaving London in December 1911 on the SS Ajana.
