Pre War

War Service

James's first enlistment is terminated after three weeks at his own request, but in Nov 1915 he had been accepted for duty with the Medical Corp, and on completion of his initial training at the Helena Vale Camp he was promoted Staff Sergeant on 10 Apr 1916.

On arrival in England, James was posted on 13 Sep 1916 to No 2 Command Depot Fovant before being detached to the 72nd Dental Unit with the 4th Training Battalion at Codford from 27 Jun 1917. On 7 Nov 1917 he moved across to the 12th Training Battalion, and after a short time in hospital with scabies to the 10th Training Battalion on 25 Mar 1918.

On 3 Apr 1918 he proceeded to France via Folkestone where he was attached to the Australian General Base Depot at Le Havre. He remained there until he returned to England on 5 Feb 1919 for return to Australia. While in France he had furlough in Paris over the 1918 Christmas period, and was also given leave when he first returned to England in Feb 1919. James was discharged by the 5th Military District on 6 Aug 1919.

"Staff sergeant of the Dental Corps, A.M.C., enlisted 29th November, 1915; sailed 20th July 1916; arrived in England September, 1916; based at the Monte Video Camp in Weymouth England."^[1]

Post War

In 1919 married Annie Smith in Perth. Annie died 13 Aug 1969 in Mandurah. Son Sidney Russell (b.9 Sep 1920-d.1982); daughter Rona Joy (b.2 Jan 1926-d.2017)

Electoral Roll entries - 1925 at 33 Temple street Victoria Park, dental assistant before moving to become a dentist based at 775 Albany road, Victoria Park (with Annie). Remained here until his death.

A letter in his records dated 15 Apr 1920 responds to a request for information as to his whereabouts from a Mdlle. Martin, Rue Parfait, Vamier 4, Thuin, Hainaut, BELGIUM.
