On 20 Aug 1942 Thomas enlisted in the Volunteer Defence Corps, and was allocated to the 12th (Jarrah) VDC Battalion. During 1943 Thomas married Freda Gibson (1918 - 2006) in the local area. On 31 Jul 1944 along with the rest of his unit he was placed in the Reserve.
Post War
Freda died on 9 May 2006, aged 87 in Como.
