War Service

Enlisted in Perth, but embarked for Egypt from Adelaide aboard RMS Morea on 26 Feb 1917. John left the Morea in Bombay and boarded HMAT A47 Mashobra there for Suez where he disembarked on 4 Apr 1917. On arrival in Egypt John marched in to the Details Camp at Moascar, and on 4 May 1917 he was transferred to 'C' Troop of 1st Australian Pack Wireless Signals Troop, serving initially at the AIF Headquarters in Cairo. The next day he was allocated a Driver's role within the unit. His Troop later became a part of the 1st (ANZAC) Wireless Signal Squadron and he was transferred to it on 4 Aug 1917 as a driver.

In Dec 1917 he was ill with pleurisy, and treated by the 35th Casualty Clearing Station before being passed to the 43rd Stationary Hospital at Kilo 151, and then to the 24th Stationary Hospital in Kantara (El Quantara), and finally to the 14th Australian General Hospital in Abbassia where he was treated from 14 - 21 Jan 1918. He was discharged to a rest camp where he was examined by a Medical Board. February 1918 was spent in rest camps before a posting to the signals base in Moascar in March 1918. On 13 Jul 1918 he was posted to the 2nd Australian Signal Squadron at Bethlehem and he was allocated to 4 Signals Troop, as a driver. Soon after the unit moved to the Jordan Valley.

Ill with Venereal Disease on 29 Nov 1918 he was treated by the 5th Australian Light Horse Field Ambulance and evacuated from West Beirut aboard HMAT A62 Wandilla operating as HMHS Wandilla to the 17th General Hospital at Alexandria. Following treatment he was released to the 32nd Casualty Clearing Station before rejoining the Signals Training Unit at Moascar on 22 Jan 1919. Total ineffective period was 55 days.

On 22 Mar 1919 he re-joined the 2nd Signals Squadron at Moascar, but by 24 May 1919 he was again hospitalised with the 4th Light Horse Brigade Field Ambulance, this time with debility (pleurisy), remaining under care, on and off until 28 Jun 1919. John returned to Australia aboard HMT Burma, embarking in Egypt on 26 Jul 1919, and disembarking on 22 Aug 1919 before being discharged by the 5th Military District on 29 Sep 1919.
