Sidney entered camp on 17 Apr 1916 with the 63rd Depot Company begore being allocated to the 21st reinforcement draft for the 16th Battalion. He departed for England on 13 Oct 1916 from Fremantle aboard HMAT A39 Port Macquarie. On arrival in England was posted to the 4th Training Battalion at Codford to prepare for service in the trenches. Here it was discovered that he had a marked loss of hearing, and on 9 Mar 1917 he was transferred to the No 2 Command Depot at Weymouth.
