War Service
Following initial training at Blackboy Hill camp, Walter and his reinforcement draft travelled to Egypt where on 26 Feb 1916 he was taken on strength of the 16th Battalion at Zeitoun. As part of the establishment of two new Division, on 2 Apr 1916 he was transferred to the 48th Battalion at Serapeum.
With the rest of the battalion, Walter boarded HMT Caledonia in Alexandria on 2 Jun 1916 for Marseilles, arriving there on 9 Jun 1916. On 28 Jul 1916 he was admitted to 12th Field Ambulance with dyspepsia, and on 30 July he was transferred to the 1st Anzac Rest Station. With his health improved, he rejoined the battalion on 3 Aug 1916.
On 8 Aug 1916 when the battalion was withdrawn from the line at Poziéres, Walter was posted as Missing in Action. A Board of Enquiry held nine months later decided that he had been Killed in Action on 6 Aug 1916 during the very heavy bombardment that occurred while the 48th Battalion was holding the front line. Thus Walter and his brother Osborne were killed the same day. Walter's Red Cross File provides no additional information. [1]
