War Service

Initial enlistment was with the CMF with Regimental Number W3330 from 28 Mar 1940 until 8 Feb 1942 on a part time basis with the 7th Heavy Artillery Brigade, and then from 9 Feb 1942 until 26 Nov 1942 on a full time basis. On 27 Nov 1942 he enlisted full time with the 2nd AIF until 13 Dec 1945.

Hi service began with a 3 month camp from 16 Apr 1940. On 23 May 1941 he was transferred to the Australian Army Service Corps at Claremont where he again went through a training camp. Called up for full time duty on 9 Feb 1942 at the Melville camp, from 13 Mar until 22 Mar 1943 he was detached to the 16th Battalion. From 14 -20 April 1942 he was detached to the 2/28th Battalion. He was granted some leave n July and then leave without pay (seasonal leave) from 30 October until 20 November 1942. Nathaniel had converted to the AIF within the unit on 27 Nov 1942.

On 5 Jan 1943 Nathaniel was charged with drunkenness for which he was awarded 3 days Confined to barracks. In July 1943 he was found to be proficient and received the pay increase associated with it, and on 4 Aug 1944 he was granted 22 days leave. His unit was transferred to NSW at this time, as on 1 May 1945 he appears to have been on detachment to the 2nd Engineers Store Base Depot where he was charged with leaving his guard post before he was relieved. For this he was fined £3 ($6). This was compounded on 5 May 1945 when he had his proficiency bonus removed as well. On 18 May 1945 he transferred to the 1st Australian Base Depot, and then on 10 Aug 1945 to the NSW Line of Command Recruit Reception and General Duties Depot. Transferred to the equivalent unit in WA, he was discharged on 13 Dec 1945. At the time of his discharge he was a member of 26 Australian Works Company.
