Pre War
On 17 Jul 1939 Leonard obtained a clerical position with the Western Australian Government Railways (WAGR) in Perth and worked with them until he was granted leave to join the RAAF on 18 Mar 1942. This leave was extended several times to cover the entire time he was in uniform.

During 1944 Leonard married Beverley Myrtle Alison Fairweather in Perth.

Following his discharge from the RAAF Leonard rejoined the WAGR on 21 Jan 1946 and resumed his clerical position at Perth until he resigned on 29 Aug 1947.
