Electoral Roll entry: 1910 labourer at "Survey Camp" in Nelson State Electorate.
War Service
Was sent to the Broadmeadows camp in Victoria for training as an artilleryman, and there he was allocated to the 3rd Division Ammunition Column, 2nd Section.
On arrival in England the unit spent another 3 months in training in the Lark hill district before moving to France on 24 Nov 1916.
On 23 Feb 1918 Lewis proceeded to the UK for leave, rejoining his unit on 12 Mar 1918. Almost a year later (Jan 1919) he again was granted leave in the UK. On his return from the second leave, he was detached to a Base unit at Le Havre.
Arrived back in Southampton on 3 Apr 1919 on his way home.
Had defective hearing in right ear caused by action near Ypres in Sep 1917, and on his return to Australia was treated for hearing loss in right ear and sore toe (trodden on by a horse during service). Discharged by the 5th Military District on 1 Sep 1919.
Post War
MARTIN.-On March 16, 1920. at Perth, Lewis George, beloved son of Mrs. Rosina Sarah Martin, of Kelmscott, brother of Mrs. F. W. Pickance, Olive, Gertrude, Herbert, William, George and Frank Martin of Kelmscott. Aged 32 years. Deeply regretted.[1]
Lewis had died in the Perth Public Hospital, but cause of death was not disclosed.[2]
