Pre War
Arrived in Australia age 26.
Electoral Roll entry: 1914 Crawford street, East Cannington, salesman. Was joint owner of the land with his brother Charles.
War Service
Entered Blackboy Hill camp on 18 Oct 1915, and following some basic training was allocated to the 9th reinforcement draft for the 28th Battalion on 16 Dec 1915. John travelled with them to Egypt, where on arrival he was sent to the 7th training Battalion at Serapeum.
On 2 Apr 1916 he was transferred from the 28th Battalion to B Company of the newly raised 51st Battalion, and on 5 Jun 1916 he sailed with his new unit from Alexandria for Marseilles aboard HMT Ivernia. Arriving in France on 12 Jun 1916, they travelled by rail wagons to the north of France over several days. On 31 Jul 1916 John was admitted to hospital to have a septic knee attended to, rejoining his unit on 8 Aug 1916.
Wounded with multiple gun shot wounds on 12 or 13 Aug 1916 when the 4th Division had been in the line attacking Mouquet Farm since the 6-7th Aug 1918. Seen by the 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station on 13 Aug 1916, he was passed back to the 6th General Hospital in Rouen by Ambulance Train, arriving there on 16 Aug 1916. Despite treatment, John died of his wounds on 18 Aug 1916 while still in the 6th General Hospital.
