Brief History

5th Australian Ordnance Port Detachment was formed at Gaythorne, Queensland in August 1944 as one of the units gathering to prepare for a role in the recapture of Borneo. It comprised 1 officer and 43 men. It was subsequently divided into four detachments which left for the staging area at Morotai (Netherlands East Indies) between March and June 1945, and those detachments then landed at Tarakan in May, Labuan in June and Balikpapan in July, with the Detachment HQ at Morotai in May before moving to Labuan in August.
