Brief History

With Australian troops required to take over from the US troops in New Guinea, the 5th Australian Infantry Division was to take over in New Britain to contain the Japanese within their base at Rabaul. IN October the ordnance depots were re-organised, with the 4th Advanced ordnance Depot at Lae split to also form the 18th Australian Advanced Ordnance Depot. In November this new unit joined the 5th Base Sub Area at Jacquinot Bay on the south coast of New Britain. By January they were already reducing the scale of equipment managed, operating at this lower level of resources until the end of the war, after which they joined the 11th Australian Infantry Division in supervising the Japanese surrender at Rabaul.
