Entered Blackboy Hill camp on 16 Dec 1914, and sent to Victoria for training. On 15 Feb 1915 he was allocated to the 4th reinforcement draft for the 14th Battalion travelling with them to Egypt before transferring on 30 Apr 1915 to the 13th Australian Army Service Corps Field Bakery with a new Regimental Number of 5300. With them he landed on to Gallipoli on 21 May 1915.

On 29 May 1915, along with the majority of his unit he sailed by trawler for Imbros Island where they established  a bakery.
