War Service
Soon after entry to Blackboy Hill Camp, Fred was allocated to the 16th Battalion on 16 Oct 1914, and posted to C Company.
An entry in his military records indicate that he was wounded on 10 May 1915, but no details. During the darkness of early morning the 16th Battalion had supported the 15th Battalion's unsuccessful attack on Turkish trenches above Quinn's Post. His presence at Convalescent Camp at Camp Helwan (a suburb of Cairo) with rheumatism on 24 May 1915, followed by a comment on his release to Base details at Zeitoun on 13 Jul 1915 so he had been evacuated from Gallipoli. On 21 Jul 1915 he embarked on HMT Kingstonian to rejoin his unit at Gallipoli. However by 85 Aug 1915 he ws again unfit for service on the peninsular, and was placed aboard SS Devanha which was acting as a hospital ship, and evacuated to Malta due to defective vision
AWOL from 13 Oct 1915 until 16 Oct 1915 (3 days). Awarded 3 days detention, total forfeiture of 6 days pay when his case was heard on 20 Oct 1915. Again AWOL from midnight 21 May 1916 until 12:00 28 May 1916. Awarded 168 hours detention and loss of a further 7 days pay (total forfeiture 14 days pay).
4 Jan 1917 Absent from fatigue duty from 9:00am until 4:00pm 3 Jan 1917, and again absent from fatigue duty from 7:00am until 4:00pm 4 Jan 1917. Awarded 28 days Field Punishment No.1.
Captured near Reincourt on 11 Apr 1917, and spent time in Dúlman Camp, Germany.
While in England he married Discharged by 5th Military District on 19 Oct 1919.
