Brief History

Opened in early January 1943 at Redlynch in Queensland to handle troops returning from New Guinea, enroute to units on the Atherton Tableland. Its permanent staff were recruited in Melbourne and Sydney, arriving in Cairns later in the month. Staff also operated from the railway stations at cairns, Mareeba and Innisfail. In July the troop movements reversed with the 7th and 9th Infantry Divisions moving to New Guinea. In January 1944 they expanded to take up to 1,500 men and operated until the end of the war processing arrivals and departures from the Cairns port.
