In January 1942 the '116th Australian General Hospital was raised in Charters Towers with 600 bed capacity. By 17 Mar 1942 the 116th AGH had moved itself into the Mount Carmel College in Charters Towers, adjacent to the local airfield. The Charters Towers air base, allowed patients to be flown in from New Guinea, both Australian and allied servicemen alike.
