Built for the UK to India / China route and owned by Peninsular & Orient Steam Navigation Co. who operated her until she was requisitioned and taken under the control of the Admiralty from 16 Sep 1914 - 1919. She was used in the Mediterranean as a troop ship before being converted as a hospital ship in April 1915. During 1915 she took part in the Dardanells campaign, and was used to land the Australian 12th Infantry Battalion at Anzac Cove. In 1916 she rescued survivors from the SS Chantala which had been torpedoed in the Mediterranean. As a hospital ship she also served in the Persian Gulf, East Africa, Bombay and Suez.
In 1919 she was again converted to carry troops, and was used to repatriate Australian troops. In 1919 she was released to her owners who continued to use her until 22 May 1925 when she was laid up. She was sold for scrap in March 1928.
One of her lifeboats which was used to land the 12th Battalion is held in the Australian War Memorial, Canberra.
