Brief History

The 4th Australian Field Survey Company was formed during January 1941 at Claremont with the aim of carrying out the Priority Mapping Programme in Western Australia. The unit moved to Karrakatta in April 1941, and having completed the near Perth area their survey parties were soon out-posted to map the area between Geraldton and Albany, working on a base grid previously complete by 3rd Geodetic Section which had been absorbed into the unit in August 1942. Reduced need brought about by reducing troop numbers and completion of high priority mapping tasks led to the unit being disbanded in early 1945.
