Brief History

Originally raised as the 5th Australian Infantry Training Battalion at Dubbo (NSW) in February 1941. In January 1942 they were set up to train recruits for units of the 1st Infantry Division. In April they were split to form the 9th Infantry Training Battalion, with Companies aligned with similar numbered battalions that they trained men for. In october 1942 the unit moved to Bathurst to join the 2nd Infantry Training Brigade, and it concentrated on reinforcements for battaions in the 5th Infantry Brigade Group.


In October 1943 training of recruits was centralised at Cowra, and in November 1943 this unit moved to Cowra and became 2nd Australian Recruit Training Battalion.
