Brief History

The 1st Australian Armoured Brigade Company AASC was formed in Sydney during December 1941 before moving to Greta in January 1942. It had a composite section, four transport sections and a workshop. In May 1942 they moved to Larrimah in the Northern Territory to work on the convoy route from Alice Springs. In July, with their parent formation to undertake training in the Narrabri area, the company moved to Singleton in July, and based themselves at Baan Baa in August and Turrawan in September.

In October a re-organisation led to them having a HQ element, five transport platoons, a composite platoon, four relief driver increments, and a workshop platoon. After several months at Gunnedah, and along with their brigade they moved to Western Australia to join the new 1st Armoured Division. In January 1943 they moved to Mingenew, and in April along with other AASC units they concentrate at Yandanooka before moving with the Division to Moora in August.

In September the 1st Armoured Division was disbanded, with the company moving to the 1st Armoured Brigade Group, and was expanded to have an additional transport platoon, and its workshop platoon now had four sections. Following the reduction of troop numbers in WA, the company moved to Northam in June 1944 before leaving for Narellan (New South Wales) in December. In January 1945 at St Ives, they were restructured as HQ 2/167th Australian General Transport Company with its sub units being the 2/93rd, 2/94th, 2/95th, and 2/96th Transport Platoons' and the 2/167th Workshop Platoon. As part of the reserve for 1st Australian Corps they worked on general transport duties in NSW before in March 1945, the2/96th Transport Platoon left to join 6th Australian Infantry Division at Aitape in new Guinea. The remainder of the Company moved to Kensington in May, remaining there for the rest of the war.
