Brief History

Artillery training prior to 1942 was handled on a state by state basis and was not well recoded. When the AIF was formed, training was generally undertaken within the units as they formed, along with reinforcement drafts. Artillery training was restructured in September 1942 with most of the NSW units moving to Hume in Victoria and units were consolidated

From early 1943 the training of artillery reinforcements was centralised, with 2nd Artillery Training Regiment moving to Greta in NSW to join the Artillery Training Centre in April 1943. 2nd Australian Field Artillery Regiment was made up from former anti-tank training units, but the New Guinea campaign required very few artillery units and so a slow disbanding of artillery units occurred. By 1944 the artillery training establishment needed to be reduced, and the 2nd Australian Artillery Training Regiment was formed to include a host of other sub units. In May, HQ Artillery training Centre had closed and the 2nd Australian Artillery Training Regiment took responsibility for all artillery reinforcement training. The Regiment moved to Black Hill in March 1945 where they trained reinforcements until the end of the war.
