Brief History

Originally a detachment from the 16th Australian Garrison Battalion]] was mannign the Liverpool Internment and POW Camp, in mid-1941 it was renamed the 21st Australian Garrison Battalion. The camp they managed was used as a transit camp for internees and later POWs arriving from overseas moving between camps or needing to be near medical facilities.

When Italian POWs were released to undertake work in agricultural industries in mid-1943, the Liverpool camp became the home camp for POWs working in NSW. The unit was reduced in size from a battalion to a company in mid-1943. In April 1945 the 21st Australian Garrison Company was absorbed into the Liverpool POW & Internment Camp. Three members of this unit died of illness.
