9th Australian Army Troops Company

Brief History

the 9th Army Troops Company was raised in South Australia for service in the Northern Territory in early 1941. Arriving in March they were located at Larrakeyah Barracks, responsible for developing defences and servicing the garrison. Following the February Japanese air raids they moved to Adelaide River with detachments at Katherine and Larrakeyah. Relieved in September 1942, they moved back to Wayville in South Australia. With new camps needing t be constructed on the Atherton Tablelands, they moved to Wondecla in Queensland during January1943. When the camps were completed they relocated to South Queensland with a permanent detachment at Warwick.

In mid 1944 they were part of the gathering of units that underwent training in preparation for a role in the liberation of Borneo, relocating to Grovelly in September and then to Strathpine in October, assigned to the 7th Base Sub Area. In May 1945 they moved to Morotai, an island in the Netherlands East Indies, and then to Balikpapan as part of the landings in July. Until the end of the war they were busy developing facilities in the area recaptured by the 7th Australian Infantry Division.
