Northern Territory Force Reception Camp

Brief History

This unit had an earlier life as the 6th Australian Infantry Division Section Reception Camp in the Middle East. Following their return to Australia they re=established themselves at Adelaide Oval before moving to Adelaide River in the Northern Territory in June 1942. In October 1942 an enlarged unit was renamed Northern Territory Force Reception Camp before becoming the 12th Australian Infantry Division Reception Camp in December. In April 1944 their name changed to again be Northern Territory Force Reception Camp and they moved to Winnellie in November. With fewer troops in the area and less need of replacements a re-organisation saw them absorb a number of staging camps along the supply lines from Alice Springs and Mt Isa leading to a final name change to Northern territory Force Details Depot with HQ in Darwin and detachments at Larrimah, Banka Banka, Elliott, Barrow creek, Alice Springs, No. 6 Bore, Camooweal and Mt Isa. The sections along the road to Mt Isa were withdrawn in July 1945 and the other detachments continued to operate until the war's end.
