Little can be found in relation to this ship. She is mentioned in military records and diaries of men travelling from Malta to Alexandria and on other journeys in the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas during 1915 and 1916.e..g. On 30 Aug 118the 24th Battalion embarked on HMT Nile for Mudross
SS Castro had been a British Cargo Steamer of 1,994 tons built in 1897 as the SS Nile. On 15 Oct 1917 while on a voyage from Weymouth to Barrow Castro was torpedoed by German submarine UC-48 when 18 km north-northeast of Brigognan, Britany, France and sunk. At the time of her sinking she was owned by P. D. Corvissiano.
