118th Australian General Hospital
From Our Contribution
General Information
Formed at Northam in July 1941, it was located in the town rather than at the Army camp. It was expanded to 800 beds in January 1942. With the decrease in troop numbers in Western Australia once the threat of invasion had passed, the unit left for NSW in March 1945. Here they assisted the 101st Australian General Hospital at Herne Bay (Riverwood NSW).
The 118th Australian General Hospital was redeployed to New Guinea, going first to Wewak, and then to Jacquinot Bay on New Britain. Withthe surrender of Japanese forces, the hospital moved to Rabual in September 1945.
