Brief History

In December 1942 the 125th Forward Ordnance Depot was formed at Charters Towers, and then moved to Ravenshoe on the Atherton Tablelands where units returning from New Guinea were resting and retraining. In February 1943 it received a large draft of men and the unit was re-organised as 13th Australian Advanced Ordnance Depot. The unit moved to Tolga in March where 17th Ordnance Stores Company was created, with combined strength of 332 all ranks. In mid-1944, they had a port detachment working at Cairns and later a vehicle detachment at Edmonton. In September the Returned Stores Depot of 13th Australian Advanced Ordnance Depot was absorbed by the 5th Returned Stores Depot.

With reduced numbers of troops based in Townsville or passing through it, the remnants of Ordnance units there were under the command of this unit. When the war ended in August, the 13th Australian Advanced ordnance Depot' comprised a Depot HQ, two Motor Transport spares sections, three clothing and general sections, two technical stores sections, one provision section, four clerical increments and five stores increments.
