Brief History

Established during 1942 in Stannum House, a magnificent Victorian 3 storey mansion built in 1888 by mining millionaire John Holmes Reid the 77th Australian Camp Military Hospital remained until 1944. Unlike many other Camp Hospitals this one had a touch of luxury - The three story brick and stucco building had front bay windows, a cast iron verandah and balcony decoration. The four panel front door has side and fan lights and the splendid vestibule has an archway supported by Corinthian pillars. Upstairs are exquisite hand engraved and patterned glass windows with a Juliet balcony leading off the main bedroom. The heavy cedar doors have crystal door knobs and fire places are Italian marble.
