Laid down in 1939 as SS Sea Hound, she was launched in 1940 and delivered on 11 Apr 1940 to Lykes Bros Steamship Co, named SS Frederick Lykes. In 1942 she circumnavigater Africa and made several Atlantic crossings before being chartered by the war department for use as a troop ship.
Acquired by the US War Shipping Administration on 21 Mar 1942, and assigned on 1 Jul 1943 to the US Army Transportation Corporation. The Todd Shipbuilding Co in New York converted her as a troop ship.
