Remarks
Little can be found in relation to this ship. She is mentioned in military records and diaries of men travelling from Malta to Alexandria and on other journeys in the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas during 1915 and 1916. e.g. On 30 Aug 1915 the 24th Australian Infantry Battalion embarked on HMT Nile for Mudross.
Built and launched as the SS Nile, a British Cargo Steamer of 1,994 tons built in 1897. Ownership changed on 1917 when she was purchsed by P. D. Corvissiano from Glen & Co. Ltd. On 15 Oct 1917 while on a voyage from Weymouth to Barrow with her new nameSS Castro, she was torpedoed by German submarine UC-48 when 18 km north-northeast of Brigognan, Britany, France and sunk.
