HMAS Glenelg
From Our Contribution
Remarks
Following her commissioning she was initially used to escort convoys from Queensland ports to Papua New Guinea, followed by Sydney to Brisbane convoys before her first refit. Following he refit she returned to New Guinea waters where she was to remain for the rest of the war. Her patrols also included Dutch New Guinea waters. During this time she rescued an American army patrol that was under heavy Japanese fire.
Returning to Australia in January 1945 for a refit, she had returned to Manus Island in late March. For the next few months she was escorting convoys to Morotai and then one to Leyte Gulf. HMAS Glenelg was in Darwin harbour when hostilities came to an end. In September she participated in the reoccupation of Ambon and the recovery of Australian POWs on the island. HMAS Glenelg remained in the Celebes area until she sailed for Fremantle and reserve status via a clockwise tour of many Australian ports.
